Choosing The Right Car Seat For Your Child

Choosing the right car seat is dependent on your child’s weight, height, age, vehicle type, and how long you want the car seat to last

Choosing the right car seat is dependent on your child’s weight, height, age, vehicle type, and how long you want the car seat to last. You might also want to check if you want a big car seat that is not easily removed or if you want one that can be moved without disturbing your sleeping baby. Remember to install the car seat properly and check if you are using it properly.

The straps must always pass through. Apart from this, you must go for a car seat that exceeds all safety standards, install it properly and learn how to use it before going on a trip with your child and also make sure you don’t buy secondhand car seats because some parts of it might be damaged and you would not know. That said, follow these steps in choosing the right car seat for your child depending on their age group
Buying a car seat for your child is dependent on their weight rather than their age. You need a car seat that will offer safety, comfort, and take care of your child’s well being on the road.

Car seats come in different sizes, colors, and shapes but are generally categorised into groups. The different baby car seat groups are:
Group 0 and Group 0+ are rear-facing car seats that are more suitable for newborns. They are portable and can be used as a baby carrier or attached to a stroller.

Group 1-2-3 also known as combination seats or 3-in-1 are suitable for toddlers and children up to 12 years. They are bulky and less portable.

Types of Car Seats

This guide will help you know what seat is suitable for your child’s age and keep travel safe for your little ones.

Basically, there are four types of car seats and as your child grows, you will need to change the direction that the car seat faces and how they sit in it. This guide will help you know what seat is suitable for your child’s age and keep travel safe for your little ones.

An infant-only rear-facing car seat is suitable for newborns and small babies. They are designed to ensure your baby’s safety until they are about 22-35 pounds or depending on the weight limit set by the manufacturer.

Your infant-only car seat must be rear-facing as this will cradle your baby’s soft bones and reduce the stress to the baby’s neck and spinal cord in case of a car accident.
They should recline at about 45° angle and should never be placed in front of an airbag.
The infant-only car seat doubles as a baby carrier, chairs and can also be fixed to your stroller. This allows for convenience as you can unstrap without waking your sleeping baby. Most models are strapped directly to the car while others are strapped to a base of the car that allows for easy removal.

If your child exceeds the maximum weight or height limit of the infant-only seat, then it is time to switch to a convertible car seat that is designed for older babies. It is recommended that your child stays in the rear-facing position until they are up to 2 years old.

Although infant-only seats are better for small babies, a convertible car seat can be used from birth until your child no longer needs a car seat. It can be used in both the rear and forward-facing position and this allows you to get more out of your investment.

With a convertible, you don’t need to change car seats as your child gets older. You just need to change the position – rear-facing for children from 2 years downwards (35 pounds or less) and forward-facing position for children 2 years and above (up. 60 pounds).

The disadvantages of using a convertible car seat are that they do not offer portability, cannot be easily moved from one place to another, and too bulky or big for smaller children.

Also called three-in-one car seats they offer you all the benefits of the rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster car seats. They are durable and can be used with children of different sizes. The overall benefit of this seat is that your child can use one seat from the rear-facing position until when he or she is old enough to use a seat belt. This car seat helps you save more in the long run

Booster seats are ideal for children within the ages of 4 to 8 years or at least 4.9 feet tall. This belt-positioning seat helps your child to sit well and is used until he/she no longer requires a car seat. While most booster seats come with a lap/shoulder belt others position your car seat belt to fit properly over your child’s body.

The kind of booster seat depends on the kind of car you are using. A booster seat with a high back is ideal for vehicles with low or no headrest and seat backs. They are designed to provide neck and head support to your child. While a backless booster seat is designed for cars with headrests.

After the recommended age for car seats, your child can begin using a seat belt but must ride at the back of the car. Before buying that car seat, ensure that it passes the required safety standards and is suited for your child’s age. Also correctly install the seats into your car and test-run it before embarking on any car journey
